The Global Sign Challenge is an annual event that seeks to celebrate the amazing stories of how individuals around the world are using their National Sign Languages to improve children’s communication skills and learning.

The goals of the challenge are:

  • to further the development, awareness and appreciation of national /regional/local sign languages.
  • promote creativity and originality in interacting with and supporting young childrens’ learning.
  • foster community and familial relationships with young children.
  • foster a sense of pride in sign language and deaf culture/identity.
  • to get sign language introduced in all early years programs worldwide by 2030.
Prizes
  • Up to 10 winners from any country in the world would receive recognition, a customized goodie bag, and a certificate of participation, for their outstanding work.
  • In Partnership with World Around You, three(3) top winners from Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Malawi, would receive training, support and coaching to work with early years centres in their community to create story books in their national sign languages for digital and print publication, distribution and use. Winners would also receive incentives on all publications.
Eligibility
  • Applicants must be using their National Sign Language to support children 0-8yrs, in their learning;
  • All countries can apply, however the 2020 book development prize would be awarded to submissions from Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Malawi.
Evaluation Criteria

The video will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Innovation
  • Content and language use (Storytelling)
  • Theme: Using sign language to interact with and support children’s learning
