How Is The Educational Structure In Singapore?

The educational system in Singapore isn’t slightly different from the rest of the countries around the globe and is as follows;

  • Six years of primary school,
  • Four to six years in secondary school,
  • One to three years in postsecondary school

Kids are tested when they enter secondary school before they join any of the three bands namely; Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) and for the records, their student’s stream is determined by the score on the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

1. Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH)

Nanyang Girls High School was founded in 1917 as an independent girls’ secondary school situated on Linden Drive off Dunearn road. NYGH is one of the oldest yet leading independent and special assistance plan (SAP) schools that places importance on providing quality education to the girl child.

2. Raffles Institution

Raffles institute or RI is one of the oldest independent private schools in Bishan that was founded in 1823 and provides for boys of age grades 1 to 4 and offers pre-university education for both boys and girls in years 5 and 6.

RI was one of the first secondary schools in Singapore to receive the MOE’s School Excellence Award (SEA) and has produced a fair number of Presidents, President’s Scholars, Speakers of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, and Chief Executive Officers.

3. Raffles Girls School (RGS)

Raffles Girls Secondary School is located in Braddell Rise and is considered one of Singapore’s oldest girl’s secondary schools which were established in 1879. It is an affiliate of Raffled Institution and enrolls only girls while Raffles Institution enrolls only boys.

Raffles Girls School has made history in the country, one significant win being the championship of a group of four students from Raffles Girls School nailing bit at the Kid’s Lit Quiz in 2018 and representing the country in New Zealand in July of that same year.

4. HWA Chong Institution (HCI)

HWA Chong Institution is one of the few private secondary schools in Singapore that were established in 2000. It offers secondary education for boys only from Years 1 to 4 and pre-university education for both boys and girls in Years 5 and 6.

HCI functions under the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) for bilingualism and offers the Integrated Programme and the Gifted Education Programme. HCI also belongs to a Strategic Alliance of Global Educators, the Strategic Educational Alliance of Southeast Asia, and the Global Learning Alliance which is made up of some widely known schools from nations like Australia, Canada, China, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, and the United States.

5. Dunman High School (DHS)

Dunman High School is a government-aided co-educational secondary school in Kallang that was founded in 1956. It adopted the Special Assistance Plan (SA) and Integrated Programme (IP), which produced three President’s Scholars in 2007. It is also one of the top-ranking high schools in the country in terms of academic results

6. National Junior College

NJC was the first government junior college that was established in 1969 in Singapore. It is located in Bukit Timah, Singapore, and offers a two-year pre-university course for students and a six-year integrated programme and both lead to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level examinations.

7. Chij St. Nicholas Girls’ School

CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School (SNGS) is both one of the 11 Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) schools and one of the designated Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools located in Ang Mo Kio that is also government-aided.

8. Methodist Girls School

Methodist Girls School is a girl’s only school in Bukit Timah, Singapore that was founded in 1887 by the Australian missionary Sophia Blackmore. The school provides a six-year primary school session and a four-year secondary education in its secondary school section.

9. River Valley High School

River Valley High School was established in 1956 in River Valley. It is a co-educational government autonomous secondary school situated now in Boon Lay, Singapore, and is one of the Special Assistance Plan schools designated by the Ministry of Education in recognition of its heritage and excellence in education.

10. Anglo-Chinese School

Anglo-Chinese School is a Methodist school located in Bukit Merah, Central Region, Singapore, and is considered one of the best secondary schools.
