The Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) is responsible for ensuring the people of the Republic of Mauritius are supported by, and benefit from, an effective disaster and emergency management system and essential emergency response services.

2. Age limit, Qualifications & Other Requirements

2.1. Candidates should have reached their 19th birthday and should not have reached their 30th birthday.

2.2. (A). Candidates should possess a Cambridge School Certificate with at least a pass in English Language, French Language and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts or Passes obtained on one certificate at the General Certificate of Education “Ordinary Level” either (i) in five subjects including English Language, French Language and Mathematics or

Principles of Accounts with at least Grade C in any two subjects or (ii) in six subjects including English Language, French Language and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts with at least Grade C in any one subject or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Disciplined Forces Service Commission.

(B). They should –

  • Satisfy the following minimum physical requirements –

For Male Candidates

  • Height: 1 m 70
  • Chest measurement: 84 cm (normal inspiration)

For Female Candidates

  • Height 1 m 63
  • Have a good physique with their Body Mass Index (BMI) values ranging between 50 and 27.50;
  • Be able to undergo strenuous physical exercise;
  • Have normal eyesight (without glasses or contact lenses);
  • Possess a Private Car Driving Licence (manual gear); and
  • Be computer literate.

Candidates should produce documentary evidence of the knowledge claimed.

The formula for the calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) is:

BMI = W (in kg) where W is the weight and H is the height

H2 (in metre) of the candidate

NOTE: 1

Candidates should not bear tattoos on visible parts of their body whilst wearing the uniform with short sleeves.

(A). Selected candidates will be appointed in a temporary capacity in the first instance and will be required to undergo both theoretical and practical training including on-the-job training for a period of at least one year in all aspects of the work of a Firefighter, as approved and arranged by the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service. On satisfactory completion of the training and on being favourably reported upon, they will be considered for appointment to the grade of Firefighter, as and when vacancies occur.

(B). Firefighters appointed on probation will be required to obtain within a maximum period of two years as from the date they are appointed in a temporary capacity in the grade –

  • A Goods Vehicle Driving Licence (manual gear); and
  • A Service Driving Licence (manual gear) for car and van before being eligible for confirmation.

(C). Firefighters who hold a substantive appointment in another post but not yet confirmed in the service and those who are already confirmed in the service will be required to obtain within a maximum period of two years as from the date they are appointed in a temporary capacity in the grade –

  • A Goods Vehicle Driving Licence (manual gear); and
  • A Service Driving Licence (manual gear) for car and van before being eligible for appointment in a substantive capacity.

NOTE: 3

Firefighters will be allowed to proceed beyond the Qualification Bar (QB) in the salary scale provided they possess a Service Motor Lorries Driving Licence (manual gear).

NOTE: 4

Firefighters will be sponsored to follow a course leading to a Certificate in First Aid, as approved and arranged by the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service.

3. Mode of Application, Physical Measurement Test, Verification of Documents and Physical Aptitude Test

3.1. Candidates should bring along a recent passport size photograph together with the originals of their:

  • National Identity Card;
  • Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate (where applicable);
  • Cambridge SC/GCE (OL) [plus HSC/GCE (AL) and higher qualifications, if any];
  • Evidence of computer literacy; and
  • Private Car Driving Licence (manual gear).

Note:

  • Candidates should wear sports shorts or training suits at the Physical Measurement Test when their weight measurement will be taken for the purpose of computation of the Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Failure to produce originals of required documents may entail disqualification.

4. Selection Procedure, Conditions of Training, Duties and Salary

4.1. Eligible candidates may be required to undergo various stages of the selection process which include measurement test, physical aptitude test, medical test and interview.

4.2. Duties and Salary:

1. To be responsible to the officer in charge of the Fire Station/Section/Unit/Crew for the performance of the following duties –

  • To prevent, fight, control and extinguish fires;
  • To protect persons, animals, property and the environment against fire or any other emergency;
  • To respond promptly and safely to all emergency calls and requests for assistance in compliance with departmental and Road Traffic Regulations;
  • To drive all types of fire service vehicle;
  • To attend to road traffic collisions and effect extrication duties;
  • To carry out search and rescue operations including intervention at sea and inland waters;
  • To head a crew in specific circumstances, as and when required;
  • To attend to Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) and oil spillage incidents;
  • To maintain and test all equipment and appliances in accordance with approved standards and procedures;
  • To verify, clean and maintain all firefighting and rescue vehicles to ensure that they are in a state of readiness;
  • To undergo continuous training and learning programmes by attending lectures, exercises, simulated incidents, practice drill sessions and maintain a level of personal fitness necessary to carry out all duties of Firefighter;
  • To educate and inform the communities on fire safety and emergency preparedness;
  • To undertake routine administrative tasks as required and to ensure all entries and records are correct and kept up-to-date;
  • To carry out fire safety inspection and enforcement of safety standards in line with Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service Fire Code;
  • To perform watchroom/control room operator duties and record entries in the Occurrence Book (OB);
  • To carry out daily testing of operational communications systems;
  • To provide training, as and when designated; and
  • To provide first aid care to victims, as and when required.

2. To use ICT in the performance of his duties.

3. To perform such other duties directly related to the main duties listed above or related to the delivery of the output and results expected from the Firefighter in the roles ascribed to him.

NOTE

1. Firefighters will be required to undergo medical/psychological tests including blood/urine tests for drug misuse, during their training period or, as and when required, to assess their fitness to service the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service.

2. Firefighters will be required to work on a shift system covering a 24 hr service including Sundays and Public Holidays, during cyclonic periods, natural calamities and during emergencies.

3. Firefighters are liable to be called upon to service any Fire Station/Section/Unit/Specialised Unit within the Republic of Mauritius.

4. Firefighters will be required to attend such theoretical and practical training courses in all aspects of the work of a Firefighter as may be approved and arranged by the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service.

  • The permanent and pensionable post of Firefighter carries salary in scale Rs 18,650 x 275 – 18,925 x 300 – 19,525 x 325 – 21,475 x 375 – 22,225 x 400 –23,425 QB 23,950 x 525 – 26,050 x 675 – 27,400 x 825 – 35,650 x 900 –36,550 a month.
  • Appointment in a temporary capacity in the grade carries a flat salary of Rs 18,650 a month.
