1. Makerere University School of Medicine
While Makerere University is one of the largest and oldest universities in Uganda with the main campus in Mulago Hill, Kampala, Uganda, the Makerere School of Medicine (MUSM) or Makerere University Medical School, Uganda has been an integral part of the University since 1924. The school offers medical courses from diploma, to undergraduate to postgraduate levels and has one of the best medical schools in Uganda.
2. Mbarara University School of Medicine
Mbarara University of Science and Technology aside Makerere University was established in 1989 on the Mbarara Regional Hospital premises, Mbarara District, Western Uganda, and is one of the oldest public universities in Uganda. The Mbarara School of Medicine (MUSM), was equally founded in 1989, the same year the university was established. The university has produced top-notch medical practitioners in the country.
3. Gulu University School of Medicine
Gulu University is one of Uganda’s best public universities that offers medical education from diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. The university’s campus is located within the boundaries of the town of Gulu, the largest urban center in Northern Uganda, and has a medical school called Gulu University School of Medicine (GUSM) which was founded in 2004, two years after the university was born.
4. Kampala International University School of Health Sciences
Established in 2004, the Kampala International University School of Health Sciences is one of the best private universities in the town of Ishaka, in Bushenyi District, Western Uganda. The school received a license to educate students in varying courses such as Human Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing from undergraduate to postgraduate level. KIU School of Health Sciences is recognized by the medical and dental licensing boards in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
5. Busitema University Faculty of Health Sciences
Situated in the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital premises on Pallisa Road, Mbale, Busitema University is one of the best public universities in Uganda. The Busitema University Faculty of Health Sciences (BUFHS), also known as the Busitema University Medical School (BUMS) is one of the newest medical schools in the country that was established in 2013.
6. Habib Medical School Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU)
Habib Medical School (HMS), named after the Habib family from Saudi Arabia who contributed so much to the equipping of the school is located at the Kampala campus of Islamic University in Uganda, on Kibuli Hillvand adjacent to Kibuli Hospital and is considered the country’s newest medical school even though it has been part of IUIU since 2014. The school provides medical education at diploma and undergraduate levels.
7. Kabale University School of Medicine
Kabale University was announced as a public university in 2015 and that was when its medical school was established. The school produces about 110 undergraduates, 50 in medicine and 60 in nursing annually, and has the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital as the designated teaching hospital of Kabale University Medical School.
8. Soroti University School of Medicine and Health Sciences
Soroti University is one of the most popular public universities in Uganda situated on the premises of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, in the central business district of the city of Soroti in Soroti District, Eastern Region. It is made up of three schools in Soroti of which the Soroti University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SUSMHS), is one.
9. Uganda Christian University School of Medicine
To establish and hoist its medical school in Mengo Hospital, Uganda Christian University School of Medicine signed a memorandum of understanding with Mengo Hospital in 2016 making the hospital its teaching institution. The medical school’s curriculum was approved in March 2017, by the UNCHE and final approval was given for three undergraduate courses in March 2018.
10. Uganda Martyrs University School of Medicine
Uganda Martyrs University’s campus is located in Nsambya Hill in Southern Kampala and its headquarters at Nkozi, Mpigi District was established in 2010. The school doesn’t offer undergraduate courses in medicine but offers postgraduate medical education in the disciplines of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Emergency Medicine.
