MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1. RECRUITS

Grade 12 NSSCO/H, NSSCO Grade 11 Certificate (New Curriculum) or equivalent qualification with a minimum of 25 points in six (6) subjects with an E symbol in English. The applicant must:

  • Be between the ages of 19 to 35 years
  • Be a Namibian citizen
  • Allow his or her fingerprints to be taken to determine previous convictions
  • Not have been convicted of any offence or have a pending case under Schedule 1
  • Not have visible tattoos on their bodies when wearing the Correctional Service Uniform
  • Be free from mental or physical defects, disease or infirmity, which will likely interfere with the proper execution of duties.
  • Be willing to submit him/herself for a comprehensive medical check-up, which also includes a physical examination.
  • Be prepared to undergo written and physical tests
  • Obtain a certificate of conduct once selected to undergo the Basic Training Course
  • Be prepared to be deployed at any Correctional Institution in Namibia.

2. FORMER CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS

  • Should have a clean record and attach a motivation letter and Basic Training Certificate
  • The age limit is 45 years of age
  • Allow his or her fingerprints to be taken to determine previous convictions
  • Not have been convicted of any offence or have a pending case under Schedule 1
  • Not have visible tattoos on their bodies when wearing the Correctional Service Uniform
  • Must be prepared to be appointed as Correctional Officer 1 (CO1), irrespective of the previous rank.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Controlling and monitoring offender movements within assigned work area
  • Conducting formal and informal head counts of offenders to ensure that each offender is present
  • Monitoring conduct of offenders in institutions, or during work or recreational activities, according to established policies, regulations and procedures to prevent escape or violence.
  • Inspecting conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors and gates at correctional institutions to ensure security and help prevent escapes.
  • Recording information, such as offender identification, charges and incidents of offender disturbance and keeping daily records of offender activities.
  • Searching offenders and vehicles and conducting shakedowns of cells for valuables and contraband, such as w*apons or D*ugs.
  • Inspecting incoming items for the presence of prohibited articles
  • Escorting offenders withing the confines of the institution or outside of the institution
  • Conducting rounds to observe behavior and mood of offenders and reporting notable incidents of sudden or unusual changes
  • Responding to emergency situations by participating as a member of the institution’s emergency response team and/or otherwise responding to emergency situations as they arise
  • Providing direction to inmates with respect to schedules, rules and behavioural requirements
  • Responding to offender requests, concerns and/or complaints within the scope of the position as defined by standing operating procedures
  • Maintaining up-to-date and accurate written routine records and reports on offender movements, counts, searches, offender behavior, property records, logs, etc
  • Providing accurate verbal/written situation reports related to offender behavior in the unit and during community escorts.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • High level of maturity and demonstrated life skills
  • High standard of interpersonal skills
  • Competency in basic computer skills
  • Ability to successfully pass all stages of the recruitment process.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Successful candidates will be appointed as recruits, undergo nine (9) months basic training at the Lucius S Mahoto Correctional Service Training College in Omaruru and, after successful completion of the training, will be appointed as a Correctional Officer 1.

Applicants must note that their appointments are subject to positive outcome of security vetting, qualification verification, medical fitness and criminal record checks and experience confirmation (where applicable)

Individuals who meet these requirements should submit their application for employment form (forms 156043 and 156094 obtainable at all Government Offices) accompanied by a detailed CV, certified copies of qualifications, Namibian Identity documents, evaluation of qualification letters from NQA and all necessary supporting documents to the nearest Correctional Facility/Institution.

In Windhoek, application for employment forms should be hand-delivered at Windhoek Correctional Facility, or at the Namibian Correctional Service National Headquarters, Brenda Simbwaye Square, Goethe Street, Block A, Ground Floor.

Mailed applications for employment forms should be forwarded to the Commissioner-General, Namibian Correctional Service, Private Bag 13281, Windhoek, attention: Human Resource Management. Note: Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. No documents will be returned.
