The #defyhatenow Cameroon project has run the Africa fact-checking fellowship for two years.

Five cohorts have been trained, bringing together professionals from the South West, North West, Littoral, Centre, North, Far North and West. About 20 members of the Cameroon Bloggers Association from Douala, Yaoundé and Dschang have also benefitted from the fellowship.

More than 53 online fact-checking and hate speech detection professionals have been trained under the #AFFCameroon program with technical assistance from ADISI-Cameroon through its sub-structure. The quarterly fellowship followed the framework of teaching advanced fact-checking techniques in collaboration with various leading actors and international organisations.

About the Fellowship

The Africa Fact-checking Fellowship is designed to follow up and build on the success of the alumni fellows. #FactsMatter237 aimed to track and map viral social media trends related to Cameroon’s major thematic issues and train trainers. While #AFFCameroon, through its various cohorts, aims to ensure seasoned professionals are empowered.

The #Africa Fact-Checking Fellowship aims to promote fact-checking, data journalism and digital rights to journalists, bloggers and content creators in Africa. The three-month program will equip fellows with the skills and tools to address the current challenges of fake news in their countries of operation.

The program is based on a blended learning model that uses webinars, practical lessons, peer-to-peer learning and hands-on fieldwork.

Eligibility

  • Applications are open to:
    • Journalists
    • Content creators and influencers
    • Digital rights activists
    • Bloggers
  • Be between 17 and 35 years old.
